This website was created in May 2006 after more than 100 people from Maine's unbridged and bridged islands gathered in at the Hutchinson Center in  Belfast for the first Island Affordable Housing Symposium on April 28-29. 

The planners of the Symposium heard from participants that the need for continued communication among residents of the year-round island communities (and those who work on their behalf) is extremely important.  It is hoped that this site and the "Island Talk" listserv will be ways to keep the conversation going and serve as a forum to share resources, ideas, and strategies about creating affordable housing and other community development projects. 

If, as it develops over time, this website helps to raise awareness about the fragility of island life and to raise some money for the Island Challenge Fund...well, that's great too.
